What Symbolism does Brooks' pet bird, Jake stand for? What other symbols are shown throughout the film that represent the ideas of hope and isolation, good and evil?
Jake the pet bird symbolises freedom. He inspires and gives hope to the inmates that one day they too also will be set free from prison. He shows us that there are openings to new life if you can make someone else happy or redeem yourself from wrong. With Jake being the colour black, he also symbolises darkness and evil inside the prison and being trapped inside the Brooks' jacket. "Some birds aren't meant to be caged." said by Red to symbolise Andy and Jake had a connection. That they are both able to survive on the outside world, while isolation will kill them. Though this is not the case for Brooks.
